RAIL unions called on the Welsh government to run its own train services yesterday.
The Labour government in Cardiff intends to deliver a not-for-profit model for the nation’s railways, but is not planning to run them directly. It confirmed Abellio Rail Cymru, Arriva Rail Wales/Rheilffyrdd Arriva Cymru, KeolisAmey and MIT Corporation (Cymru) as bidders for the Wales and Borders franchise and the South Wales Metro.
The RMT and TSSA unions responded by branding the list a “missed opportunity” to take the railways into public control.
