TOOTHLESS government water watchdog Ofwat was slammed yesterday for allowing privatised water companies to overcharge customers by £1.2 billion.

General union GMB said that Ofwat was “unfit for purpose,” having failed to keep tabs on the money-grabbing companies at the same time as the companies themselves were pleading poverty and attacking the pensions of thousands of the industry’s workers.
