RED SEA: A cargo ship came under attack from unknown armed assailants on Sunday, 30 nautical miles south-west of the Yemeni city of Hodeida, the British military said.

A skiff approached the bulk carrier and opened fire, forcing security guards to return fire, before sailing back to a larger ship about two nautical miles away with its automatic identification system switched off, the British military said.

The cargo ship and crew were reported safe.

SLOVAKIA: A referendum on whether to cancel lifelong payments for Prime Minister Robert Fico and others after their terms in office expire failed to produce a valid result on Saturday, due to low turnout.

With the votes from 99.5 per cent of all polling stations counted, turnout was 16.1 per cent, far less than the required 50.

Slovak prime ministers and parliament speakers who served at least two terms in office are entitled to receive a lifelong payment — a monthly sum that equals the salaries of lawmakers in Parliament.

PERU: Far-right politician Keiko Fujimori was declared the winner of the presidential runoff election on Friday.

Ms Fujimori, 51, the daughter of disgraced former dictator Alberto Fujimori, was running for the presidency for the fourth time. She will be Peru’s ninth president in 10 years when she takes office later this month.

Her victory, along with that of Abelardo de la Espriella in Colombia and Jose Antonio Kast in Chile, confirms a regional shift toward the far right.

KOREAS: The North’s Kim Jong Un supervised tests of a nuclear-capable cruise missile and other weapons aboard a new 5,000-ton destroyer, the Kang Kon, state media said on Sunday.

The Korean Central News Agency said Friday’s event included test firings of a strategic cruise missile and of the Kang Kon’s main gun and automatic cannons.

After observing the tests from shore, Mr Kim ordered officials to complete the destroyer’s trials and place the vessel in active duty within two months, the state news agency said.
