ANDY BURNHAM must “stand up to Donald Trump” and block US military from Prestwick and other British air bases, according to the Scottish Greens.

Scottish Greens co-leader Gillian Mackay MSP spoke out in response to reports that the new Prime Minister had offered the US president the same access to British bases to launch illegal attacks on Iran offered by his predecessor.

She said: “The US has renewed its air strikes on Iran, continuing a disastrous and dangerous war. At a time when the risks of further escalation are so clear, the new Prime Minister must draw a line. 

“Andy Burnham needs to move on from the failed approach of Keir Starmer, who bent over backwards for Donald Trump and allowed Prestwick and UK air bases to be used in support of his reckless and illegal assaults in the Middle East.

“Donald Trump is a dangerous warmonger who has shown contempt for international law and human rights. Keir Starmer chose to embrace him and support his actions. 

“Andy Burnham faces a choice — will he stand up to Donald Trump or will he make the same mistakes again?”

Ms MacKay also hit out at the Labour government’s decision last week to plough £15 billion into the home of Britain’s nuclear fleet, Faslane, as well as Mr Burnham’s choice of defence secretary.

“Wes Streeting’s appointment as defence secretary only reinforces that this is politics as usual,” she said.

“His continued support for nuclear weapons shows the same contempt for Scotland. 

“We do not want these weapons of mass killing on the Clyde and nor does our Parliament. 

“They put a target on our back and are designed to kill indiscriminately.”

A UK Government spokesperson said:  “The Prime Minister was notified of the decision taken last week to extend the existing agreement for the US to use UK bases in the collective self-defence of the region, including US defensive operations to degrade the missile sites and capabilities being used to attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

“The UK’s approach to the conflict remains the same - we are committed to defending our people, our interests and our allies, acting in accordance with international law and not getting drawn into the wider conflict.

“We continue to work with international partners to develop a viable plan to safeguard international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, and to underline the need for urgent de-escalation and a swift resolution to the war.”
