PALESTINIAN journalist Muhammad al-Qiq has begun a new hunger strike in protest against his second stint in Israeli prison without trial.
The Palestinian Quds News Agency quoted relatives of Mr Qiq, a reporter for Saudi news agency Almajd TV, saying that he had stopped eating on Monday after Israeli authorities sentenced him to six months’ “administrative detention.”
He was released from his previous stretch of detention in May, months after he ended a 94-day hunger strike that almost killed him.
But he was rearrested again on January 17 after attending a protest in the occupied West Bank city of Bethlehem demanding Israel return the bodies of Palestinians shot by security forces to their families for burial.
Palestinian prisoner solidarity network Samidoun said Israeli authorities had not yet pressed charges, although they had earlier said they were investigating Mr Qiq for “incitement” on social media — a charge commonly used against protesters.
Israel has previously claimed he is a Hamas militant.
