Scotland Aberdeen bus drivers to walk out over ‘two-tier’ workforce

BUS drivers are set to strike over the creation of a “two-tier workforce,” the Unite union announced yesterday.

FirstGroup workers in Aberdeen will follow up an overtime ban and a series of one-day strikes with a week of walkouts from March 26.

Unite said bosses had imposed changes to pay, overtime, sick pay, and working patterns which added up to slash workers’ income by up to a quarter.

Unite Scotland officer Willie Wallace said: “We have a situation where a two-tier workforce has meant new starts are employed on lesser terms and conditions than those on older contracts.

“This needs to stop and our members have made this clear with this result.

“First Aberdeen should reconsider Unite’s proposals which would halt this action.”

Unite members voted in favour of strikes on a 95 per cent margin. Ballot turnout was 81 per cent.

FirstGroup did not respond to the Star’s request for comment.
