ANTI-WAR activists in Scotland have demanded MSPs join their Welsh colleagues in backing a Gaza ceasefire.
A Green motion stating “Parliament supports the United Nations secretary-general’s calls for a ceasefire in Gaza” will be debated next week having already received cross-party support, including from Labour’s Anas Sarwar and SNP First Minister Humza Yousaf.
On the eve of a national rally for peace on Glasgow Green, voices from across civic society have backed Stop the War Scotland’s calls for Holyrood to unite for a ceasefire.
Stop the War Coalition Scotland secretary Sophie Johnson commented: “The call for a ceasefire is irresistible.
“That is why so many support such a call — both in the public and among trade unions, civic institutions, charities, aid agencies, and beyond.
“Every hour of every day that passes brings about more death and destruction.
“We urge MSPs to pass the motion in the Scottish Parliament next Tuesday.”
Stop the War Scotland has called on supporters of peace to rally at Nelson’s Column, Glasgow Green at noon on Saturday.
STUC deputy general secretary Dave Moxham said: “It is clear public opinion across the world is strongly in favour of a ceasefire.
“This should also be reflected in every parliament across the world, including Scotland’s.”
Human rights campaigner Pinar Aksu said: “Supporting the ceasefire in Gaza is the least we can all do.
“As we approach Human Rights Day, we must all say enough is enough and ask for an end to this atrocity.”
Comedian Frankie Boyle said: “History will judge all of us, and especially politicians, on how we act.
“The Scottish Parliament has an opportunity to reject the inaction of the UK government and to join the growing chorus — from aid agencies to charities like Save the Children and indeed, the United Nations — in calling for an urgent ceasefire.”
