The great escape from apartheid
MARIA DUARTE recommends a thrilling account of two political prisoners' breakout from maximum security prison in South Africa

Escape From Pretoria (15)
Directed by Francis Annan

THIS intense race-against-time thriller is based on the remarkable real-life prison escape of two political prisoners jailed during the apartheid era in South Africa.

In 1978, anti-apartheid activists Tim Jenkin (Daniel Radcliffe) and Stephen Lee (Daniel Webber) were given draconian prison sentences of 12 and eight years respectively for  producing and distributing pamphlets on behalf of banned organisations, including the South African Communist Party, the ANC and its armed wing Umkhonto we Sizwe, and urging people to join the liberation movement.
