IRAQ is witnessing important developments and facing many challenges at various levels — political, economic, social and security — as well as the effects of climate change, water scarcity and environmental deterioration.
In the current political scene, several internal and external factors are at play. The ethnic-sectarian power-sharing system and endemic corruption continue to dominate the political scene.
The ruling elite or oligarchy, under this system, is seeking to perpetuate its control of political power, influence and interests, and to further strengthen the deep state and the militarisation of society.
