London’s ‘world-beating’ bus crisis: a view from the cab

AS A bus driver of 39 years’ experience, I can say with confidence I have seen our position in the social order decline. 

In 1983 when I started, London’s buses were a secure, safe way to earn a living. One could, after an initial qualifying period, borrow from the company at preferential rates and buy a house in Stoke Newington, for example. Not any more. 

Our union was so strong we didn’t need to go on strike — management knew better than to be unreasonable.
