TUC slams Tory government as ‘worst in modern history’ for declining living standards

THE Tory government was slammed by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) today as “the worst in modern history” for declining living standards for working people.

The TUC was responding to the latest data by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showing that living standards are lower now than when the Tories won the last election in 2019.

TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said: “This parliament will go down as the worst for living standards in modern history — with households worse off than at the start.”

He said wages were worth less now than before the financial crash of 2008.

“The Conservatives can try and blame external events. But 14 years of Tory stagnation have been toxic for family budgets,” he said.

“We can’t go on like this. We need a government that will make work pay.”

Mr Nowak said TUC analysis showed that if real wages had grown at their pre-crisis levels workers would be on average £14,000 a year better off.
