Germany signs raw materials deals with Canada in bid to realign economy away from Eurasia

MINERAL and hydrogen export deals were signed by Canadian and German leaders in Montreal today, as Berlin seeks replacements for Russian raw materials.

A delegation led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz had been in Canada since Sunday, with ambitious aims of detaching Europe’s largest economy from its deep economic ties to Eurasia and forging a transatlantic bloc instead.

German industry is heavily dependent on Russian gas imports, which have shrunk significantly since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February.
