ALMOST ubiquitously absent in recent VE Day commemorations in Britain was a recognition of the role played by the millions of Soviet citizens who gave their lives in the fight against fascism.

The crucial turning point in WWII was the battle of Stalingrad (1942-43), one of the bloodiest in modern warfare, which halted the Nazi advance and paved the way for allied victory. VE Day could not have happened without that Soviet triumph, won at an almost unimaginable human cost.
