Fownhope’s Heart of Oak Society traces its roots to the age of friendly societies, when communities provided their own safety net. Its anniversary celebrations reveal a tradition still very much alive, says MARK SEDDON
PMQs shows just how hollow Tory policy is
Cameron’s predictable parliamentary posturing is no match for real policies to bring about social justice, such as those put forward by Corbyn and McDonnell, writes CALLUM TOWLER
Sometimes I watch PMQs as if it’s a dystopian pantomime, like if all the robots in Isaac Asimov’s I, Robot defeated the people, but staged democracy once a week in Parliament just for a laugh.
Witnessing David Cameron duck, dive and quip his way through the weekly questions is to watch a well-oiled machine programmed to dodge bullets.
Rarely ever does he respond candidly. Instead, in the space where thoughtful answers should be, we’re treated to nothing more than evasion and brazen attacks.
