THE debate on the EU referendum campaign has been constrained and dominated by two equally reactionary unpalatable right-wing camps. It was given fresh oxygen by the publication yesterday of the Office for National Statistics long-term international migration estimates for 2015.
Total net migration into Britain and Northern Ireland came in above 300,000 for the fourth year in a row, at least demonstrating that the Tories are consistent in one area — failing to achieve their own back-of-the fag-packet targets.
Fourteen per cent of those migrating here in 2015 were returning British citizens, with the rest nearly evenly split between EU and non-EU citizens. More than two-thirds of the 250,000 migrants from the EU came for work-related reasons. The overwhelming majority had employment already lined up.
