Russia Putin: St Petersburg supermarket explosion was terror bombing

AN EXPLOSION at a St Petersburg supermarket that hurt at least 13 people on Wednesday night was a terrorist attack, Russian President Vladimir Putin said yesterday.

He added that authorities had prevented a second bombing.

The bomb, packed with shrapnel to cause grievous injuries, was placed in a cloakroom area for customers’ bags.

Mr Putin’s spokesman would not disclose further details about the bomb or who investigators thought had placed it, but he said that the fact that it was a nail bomb was fairly conclusive evidence of an act of terrorism.

The bombing followed the reported thwarting of a series of attacks in the city earlier this month. Authorities said Kazan Cathedral and other crowded sites were the targets.

Russia’s federal security service said that it had arrested seven people in connection with that plot, with the suspects allegedly linked to the Isis death cult.

In April, a 22-year-old suicide bomber killed 16 people and hurt more than 50 in an attack on St Peterburg’s Metro underground railway.
