Audio Interview ‘The idea Britain hasn’t intervened in Syria is a complete fantasy’

Ben Cowles speaks with Stop the War’s LINDSEY GERMAN on the campaign's opposition to the West's latest bombing raid on Syria and the ridiculous claims that anti-interventionists have blood on their hands

A VIDEO emerged on April 7 from Douma, Syria, claiming to show the victims of a chemical weapons attack which killed 42 people.

The Bashar al-Assad regime denied responsibility, their Russian allies said it had “incontrovertible evidence” that the whole thing was faked and France claimed it had proof that the Syrian government had used chemical weapons.

Before the Organisation for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) could investigate the attack, the US, Britain and France decided on April 13 to “respond” and launched a bombing raid on Syria in much the same way as it did  after last year’s claimed chemical weapons attack.

While Donald Trump, Emmanuel  Macron and Theresa May risked sparking hostilities with Vladimir Putin’s nuclear-armed state in a conflict they have been prolonging since it began in 2011 by funding both supposedly “moderate” and openly jihadist forces, millions of Syrian refugees are having to deal with the “hostile environments” of Europe and the United States.

I caught up Stop the War Coalition convener Lindsey German to discuss the campaign’s opposition to Western intervention in Syria, how it deals with being labelled Assad/Putin apologists and the ridiculous claims that those calling for peace have blood on their hands.

Lindsey German is convener of the Stop the War Coalition. Ben Cowles is the Morning Star’s web editor. You can find Stop the War on Twitter on @STWuk and Ben Cowles on @Cowlesz.
