THE first deployment of the atomic bomb by the United States against Japan, obliterating Hiroshima, on August 6 1945 was announced promptly and without apology.   

The justification given was that it would shorten the war and therefore save lives, and this claim has never gone away.  

But it was and is deception: the truth was different, as has been demonstrated in many publications since.
